Emerging Technology – Virtual Reality (Gaming)
General information
The topic/emerging technology I have chosen to discuss is Virtual Reality and gaming being intertwined. The purpose of virtual reality within gaming is to advance immersion, realism and gamer experience/enjoyability. Virtual Reality generally involves a headset, controllers and sensors that track the users movements; the virtual world is designed to trick the users senses into believing that what is around them is truly there.
Technical and historical information
The earliest technology of virtual reality began in 1920 with flight simulation, it was used as a training device for beginner pilots. This then went onto Sensorama that was created in 1957 it had speakers, odor dispensers, and a moving chair to fully immerse the user in that world. The HMD was next in line bringing with it the ability to change the field of view via the user moving their head. Next cam the Virtual Reality Arcade Machines in the 1990’s bringing with it full body VR suits and glasses. Which brings us to where VR stands today. In 2010 Palmer Luckey created the first oculus rift which was eventually bought by Facebook for 2 billion dollars. Now in 2017 there are hundreds of companies racing to bring the next generation of Virtual Reality and break the wall into mainstream gaming.
A Virtual Reality Kit consist of Hardware and software. On the hardware side you start with a CPU in the form of a smartphone, console or PC to do the processing. Then there are the handheld controllers which receive input from the user and display the reactions within the virtual environment. There is also a visual display headset which shows the user the 3D environment and their character interacting with said environment. The final hardware devices are motion sensors which detect movements from the handheld controllers and move the in game character accordingly. There are also some optional hardware such as gloves, treadmills and body suits, but these are non essential and the average person doesn’t have the resources to own all these items. On the software side of things SDK (software development kit) is generally used to to build the creators own virtual world; as this is the easiest software that comes with its own drivers, easy to use UI and some pre built designs. The Software analyzes incoming data and generates correct feedback in a timely manner.
Impact of Technology
Virtual Reality is constantly being altered and revolutionized for all different industries from medical procedures, Gaming, Education, Marketing, Travel, Real Estate, Automotive and everything in-between. These industries will be impacted by Virtual Reality as this will allow them to further involve and immerse customers with products and future developments within their division of the industry. I chose this topic mainly because it is something I am very interested in and the movie ‘Ready Player One’ depicts an advanced Virtual Reality which I believe will soon be created within our world. This technology is slowly emerging into the mainstream as it because cheaper to manufacture and easier for creators to develop new and improved games, this will entice gamers and expand the community dramatically.
